Southwest Florida Monster Eagle Ray.

Postby NPike_Guy on April 17th, 2017, 10:23 pm

Just returned from a trip to Marco Island. Didn't really know what to expect heading down there but after a couple days my buddy and I found a stretch of beach to fish and were able to put a few southerns in the cooler. 30 minutes after kayaking a 5+ lb chunk of ray out 300 yds or so my Tiagra 80A started screaming! I ran over and threw it into strike but the fish continued to run. Finally after maxing it out to full I was able to turn it (at this point I was convinced it was a big hammer or tiger). 30 minutes later I was shocked to see the biggest eagle ray that I have ever seen flopping in the surf! She was cleanly hooked in the corner of the mouth and after a few pictures was safely released. Given that they are a protected species I didn't want to take the time to measure her but I can confidently say that it was 6+ feet across (given that I am 6'3" and couldn't reach from one wing to the other). It was truly a catch of a lifetime for me! I honestly don't think that I've seen one this big caught on rod and reel and would appreciate any input on how much this beast might have weighed. Later on in the trip we were treated to a decent bull, lemon, and a juvenile hammer. Can't wait until I move to Ft. Lauderdale in a couple weeks!

Edit: Sorry the file is too big, trying to figure out how to upload the pics!!

Edit 2: Guess it's Facebook for now.

Nice fish!!!
Something has to change. Undeniable dilemma. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
Constant overstimulation numbs me, but I wouldn't want it any other way.--Tool
